Indian Railway Chittaranjan Locomotive; Chittaranjan Locomotive Works (CLW) is named after the great freedom fighter, leader and statesman Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das.

Production activity began on 26 January 1950, the day India became a republic. The initial product of Chittaranjan Locomotive Works was a steam locomotive. Chittaranjan Locomotive Works manufactured a total of 2351 steam locomotives in the period 1950-1972. From 1968 to 1993 CLW produced 842 diesel locomotives and from 1961 to 31-03-21 a total of 7575 locomotives were produced. Various types of electric locomotives.

CLW has proven over the years to be one of the most efficient, promising and reliable Locomotive manufacturers. It has transformed itself from a manufacturer of steam locomotives to a manufacturer of diesel locomotives and finally to modern, high power, electric locomotives. The venture has paid off and presently CLW is proudly producing state-of-the-art 3-phase locomotives with all modern features of the latest “Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor” (IGBT) technology.

It is one of the largest electric locomotive manufacturer in the world. CLW also manufactures AC Traction Motors, Switch Gears/Control Gears, Bogie Cast & Fabricated, Wheel Sets and Steel Castings.

Presently, CLW is playing a vital role in making Indian Railways self-reliant in the field of electric traction for both high speed and heavy haulage loads, and thus acting as a vehicle to strengthen the Indian economy. Our dedicated effort over the years has resulted in the rapid growth and development of this workshop in providing freight as well as passenger transportation solutions.
