Ashoka University Overview
Ashoka University is named after Emperor Ashoka. The idea was generated during an interaction with the students of IIT Delhi. He later approached Pramath Raj Sinha, former dean of the Indian School of Business, for help in setting up the university. The project was code-named Project Nobel, reflecting the founders’ aspiration to produce future Nobel laureates. At the same time, Sanjeev Bikhchandani and Ashish Dhawan approached Pramath with the vision of a university, and Pramath merged the two philosophies.
Early discussions tended to establish an Institute of Engineering and Technology that would match the reputation of leading institutions in the field, such as MIT, the University of Pennsylvania, and Stanford University. Ashoka’s university founders signed a MoU with the University of Pennsylvania School of Engineering and Applied Science. The list of founders names 22 people including Ashok Trivedi, Dilip Shanghvi, Nirmal Jain, Sanjeev Bikhchandani and Jerry Rao. Later, this list increased to 46.
Ashoka focused his attention on a liberal arts approach, providing instruction in the core sciences, social sciences and humanities. The decision was a result of industry demand as well as a desire to change the mindset of Indian students and parents, not to see education as an end in itself rather than just a step towards securing a job. Trivedi reinforced this decision by establishing the Trivedi Center for Political Data (TCPD) in partnership with the University of Michigan. Ashoka University Campus
Ashoka University is located in Sonepat, Haryana, with its main campus being 25 acres (10 ha) in Rajiv Gandhi Education City in Sonepat, Haryana. Ashoka University Governance
Ashoka University is wholly funded by donations, no hierarchy exists in the founding group in terms of decision-making. Young India Fellowship (YIF)
Young India Fellowship (YIF), offered as a Post Graduate Diploma in Liberal Studies, is the signature program at Ashoka University. The group of 200 fellows comes from diverse academic, professional, socio-economic, and geographic backgrounds. Within a year, they are involved in diverse fields of study, research and practice. Since 2011, YIF has had over 1700 participants. Its first graduating class consisted of 57 fellows, all of whom were awarded full scholarships. The program consists of eight terms of six weeks with a maximum of four courses in each semester. The fellowship emphasizes writing, research, and experiential learning in the form of 8-month part-time experiential learning modules. There is an age restriction on the application for the fellowship and it allows only students who are maximum 28 years of age to apply for the programme.

Ashoka University offers Postgraduate programs in the form of master’s degrees and Ph.D. Program. Currently, master’s degree programs are offered in economics, English, and liberal studies as well as the Ashoka Scholars Program.
