Department of Management Studies-(DMS IITD), New Delhi

The Department of Management Studies is the result of an idea development process started in 1963. What was then a seed, slowly came to life and in 1974, IIT Delhi set up an internal committee to examine the working of the management sector at the Institute. In 1975, an expert committee was established to formally examine the possibility of launching the field in a more sustained fashion. The result was an M.Tech program in “Management Systems”, at the School for Systems Studies (later renamed the School for Systems and Management Studies). The Management Core Group was established in 1978 and the key inputs for full-time management education at IIT(D) were reaffirmed by an advisory committee constituted by academia and industry representatives. Since then never looked back. The School of Systems and Management Studies became a center for Systems and Management Studies. Later its name was changed to Center for Management Studies.

About DMS IITD

The Department of Management Studies currently consists of a two-year full-time MBA program (focusing on general and telecommunications systems management) and a three-year part-time MBA program (focusing on technology management).

The department was brought into existence in 1993 by amending the IIT(D) statutes. Clearly, the department responds to the felt need of the Indian industry and derives satisfaction from its heavy field orientation in all its curricular activities. Responding to feedback from students, alumni and industry, the Department of Management Studies introduced MBA programs in 1997. The department currently runs a two-year full-time MBA program (with a focus on General and Telecommunication Systems Management) and a three-year part-time. The origin of the college dates back to the year 1920, when, on the day of Basant Panchami, seven prominent businessmen headed by Lala Shri Ram established the Commercial Education Trust in Delhi. The first school under the Trust in the same year, the name of the school was ‘The Commercial School’ at Charkhewalan, which was within the boundary wall of pre-independence Delhi. The school started the Post-Matric Diploma Program in Commerce under the supervision of Shri R.K. Kumar, who later became the first Principal of the Commercial College. The opening of the Commercial College paved the way for the entry of commerce education into the Delhi University system.

The first batch of commercial college students were enrolled on the first floor of a ‘hall’ opposite St James’ Church at Kashmere Gate. Classes began with twelve students and four faculty members from a rented bungalow at 8, Darya Ganj, New Delhi.
