The Free University of Berlin is a research university located in Berlin, Germany. It is one of the most reputable universities. It is known for its research in the fields of humanities and social sciences as well as natural and life sciences. The Free University was established in 1948 in West Berlin during the early Cold War period with American support as a de facto Western development of Frederick William University, located in East Berlin and facing strong communist repression had to do; Its name refers to the state of West Berlin as part of the Western "free world", unlike the "unfree" communist world in general and the "unfree" communist-controlled university in East Berlin in particular. The free University of Berlin is one of eleven German elite universities in the Germany.
Since 2003, FU Berlin has been classifying its research capabilities into interdisciplinary research focus areas called clusters. In the same year due to financial cuts and reorganization of medical schools, the University of Berlin and Humboldt University merged to form a joint department of medical institutions. The year 2007 was another important year for the Open University of Berlin as it was the university with the most approved funding applications in the German University Excellence Initiative, and it is now nine elite to receive funding for its future development strategy One of the German universities. In the same year, the University of Berlin dedicated a memorial to the founding students killed during the protests. The University offers its Freedom Award to celebrities who have made a special contribution to the cause of independence.

The district of Dahlem is a center of attraction for research and culture: in addition to several institutions of the renowned Max Planck Society (among others: Max Planck Institute for Research in Education (MPIB), MPI for Science History, MPI for Molecular Genetics ), Fritz Haber Institute (FHI) is working in the field of molecular physics and physical chemistry and the collection of MPGs),the campus is also home to some federal institutions such as the Zuse Institute Berlin as well as the Federal Institute for Materials Research (BAM) and the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR).
