Overview

Ludwig Maximilian University was established in 1472 and is also known as the University of Munich. It is an open research university associated with LERU, Europaeum and German Excellence Universities. Earlier, the university was known as Ingolstadt University. The German University Excellence Initiative has recognized the university as 'Elite University' in Germany. In the year of establishment, the University consisted of only four faculties, namely, Faculty of Jurisprudence, Faculty of Theology, Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Philosophy. Initially, the university was built into the old academy, but later, in 1826, it was moved to Ludwigstrab. It gained popularity during the nineteenth century as the best university for scientific research. In 1903, the university began accepting female students and became a coeducational institution.

The university campus consists of various institutes and research centers. In addition to the centers, Geschwister-Schol-Platz is the main building located in the campus. The campus has some notable research centers with eighteen faculties, the Carson Center for the Environment and Society, the Research for Integrated Protein Science, the Permnids Research Center, the Nanosystems Initiative Munich, and the Anthropological Center of Munich. The major faculties include Faculty of Law, Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Business Administration, Faculty of Theology, Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of History, Faculty of Educational Sciences and Faculty of Language and Literature. These faculties created within the campus have a well-maintained academic structure and experienced faculty members who provide adequate knowledge to the students.

The total strength of the university is 6,017 staff members with about 51,025 students. It offers an undergraduate degree program and a postgraduate degree program. In addition, the curriculum includes diplomas and specialized courses. About 100 programs are included in the educational structure which provides a great opportunity for students to choose between different subjects according to their interest. Some of the well-known subjects of the university are Physics, Psychology, Management and Business. Faculty members also take students for industrial travel so that they can gain exposure and knowledge about the vast field of research. In addition, some of the research centers located in the university provide a huge scope for students to know and understand the research course.

The University contains a notable list of alumni Wilhelm Conrad Rontgen (Nobel Prize in Physics), Valdas Adumkus (President of Lithuania), Max Weber (Renowned Sociologist), Muhammad Iqbal (Urdu Poet), Bertolt Brecht (Theatre Director), and Konrad Adenauer (Former Chancellor of Germany).
