Overview

Columbia University was established as King's College in 1754 by the royal charter of King George II of England. It is the oldest institution of higher education in New York State and the fifth oldest in the United States.

Initially, the university was popular as King's College and later, in 1784, it was renamed as Columbia University. Many scholars and scientists at the university have embarked in notable research and breakthroughs, including atomic stacks, brain-computer interfaces, and nuclear magnetic resonance.  Researchers also noted the first evidence of tectonic plates and continental drift.

Located in Morningside Heights in New York, Columbia University is the second largest landowner in the US. The complex was designed according to architects, Mead, White and McKim. It is spread over 32 acres of land and is beautifully built. In addition, the campus has undergraduate students and 8,000 apartments. In addition, the library is designed in a neo-classical style and maintains over 11 million books and research papers. It has some famous books which are inscribed with the names of great writers, thinkers and philosophers. The campus also includes accommodation facilities and is located near restaurants, cafes, medical stores, general stores, and other shops that provide basic necessities to students.

Currently, the university is occupied by around 10,000 undergraduate and 25,500 postgraduate students. Columbia University has tie-ups with Caltech, Yale and MIT and provides a wide scope of opportunity so that students receive exposure as well as a separate course. The academic structure includes a wide range of subjects, such as American studies, anthropology, architecture, business, philosophy, and history. Some popular and creative subjects are drama and theater arts, dance, film and media studies, music and visual arts.

The University has a notable list of alumni including Barrack Obama and Theodore Roosevelt (former President of the US), Alan Greenspan (President of the US Federal Reserve Bank), Eric Holder (Attorney General, America, Edwin Armstrong (inventor of FM radio) ), Julian S. Schwinger (pioneer of quantum field theory) and George O'Keefe (as the mother of American modernity Is known).
