Under Section 3 of the UGC Act of 1956, Dr. D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth (DPU), Pune, supported by the Dr. D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth Society, was recognized as a "Deemed-to-be-University" in 2003. Over the past 20 years, DPU has developed dramatically with the addition of eight more constituent units under its purview from a modest beginning with one constituent unit, namely Dr. D. Y. Patil Medical College, Hospital and Research Centre, in Pune. In a notification dated January 11, 2003, the Government of India, MHRD, declared Dr. D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth, Pune as a Deemed-to-be University, consisting of Dr. D. Y. Patil Medical College, Hospital and Research Centre, Pimpri, Pune.
With its notification dated September 20, 2006, the Government of India's Ministry of Human Resource Development later added three additional institutions—the Dr. D. Y. Patil Dental College & Hospital, Pimpri, Pune; the Dr. D. Y. Patil College of Nursing, Pimpri, Pune; and the Dr. D. Y. Patil College of Physiotherapy, Pimpri, Pune—under the purview of the deemed-to-be-university. The UGC then authorized three new institutions: the Dr. D. Y. Patil Biotechnology & Bioinformatics Institute in Tathawade, Pune, the Global Business School & Research Centre in Tathawade, Pune, and the Dr. D. Y. Patil Institute of Optometry & Visual Sciences in Pimpri, Pune.
Additionally, the Joint Committee of UGC-AICTE-DEC, New Delhi, approved the Institute of Distance Learning, Pimpri, Pune, via DEC Letter dated August 4, 2010. The UGC then granted authorization for continuation in a letter dated June 3, 2014. In a letter dated September 6, 2016, the UGC gave its most recent approval for the academic years 2016–17 and 2017–18. By clause 4.10 of UGC (Categorization of University Only) for the grant of Graded Autonomy Regulation, 2018, the UGC has approved ODL Programs in a letter dated March 26, 2019. Additionally, the UGC has given authority in a letter dated July 7, 2020, for the programmes to be offered online starting in the 2019–20 academic year in January 2020 and forward.
The Dr. D. Y. Patil Homeopathic Medical College & Research Centre, Pimpri, Pune, and Dr. D. Y. Patil College of Ayurved & Research Centre, Pimpri, Pune were added as constituent colleges to the Dr. D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth, Pune (Deemed to be University) by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) on the advice of the UGC in its notification No. F.10-12/2016-U
As a result, Dr. D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth, Pune (DPU) began as a small organization with just one institution. With the addition of 9 additional professional institutions during the past 18 years, it has expanded by leaps and bounds. In the fields of medicine, dentistry, nursing, physiotherapy, optometry, biotechnology, management, ayurveda, and homeopathy, the nine institutions of Dr. D. Y.
