The crest of St. Xavier's University, Kolkata, draws inspiration from the Jassu Crest of Saint Francis Xavier's family, the university's patron saint. This emblem has been thoughtfully adapted to reflect the local ethos, imbuing it with the distinct essence of an Indian university.
At its core, the escutcheon, presented in white and blue, features a tiger and a palm tree beneath a silver crescent moon, symbolizing Xavier’s ancestral palacio. The emblem on the dexter side, marked with "IHS" (Iesus Hominum Salvator - Jesus, Savior of Humanity), signifies the university's deep-rooted affiliation with the Society of Jesus. At the base, the checkered pattern of argent and sable symbolizes the enduring spirit of the Xaverian family.
Encircling the escutcheon is a garter bearing the inscription St. Xavier's University, Kolkata, topped with a cross emitting radiant holy light. Below, a scroll inscribed with the university’s motto, Nihil Ultra (Nothing Beyond), reinforces the institution's aspirational ethos.
This crest embodies dignity, courage, and a serene brilliance, serving as a call to transcendence. It encapsulates the relentless pursuit of excellence and the enduring quest for greater achievements.
