The University of Mumbai has a vision to provide higher education to the students who cannot go to regular classes due to working, financial, social and personal commitments. The university started to offer distance education courses in 1971-72 with the establishment of the Directorate of Correspondence Courses, with the aim of promoting flexible learning. It was elevated to the status of a university institution in 1993 as the directorate became the Institute of Distance Education. This effort helped to increase the opportunities for students to achieve postsecondary education. The University of Mumbai, both through its distance and online learning programs, continues to serve students who want to further their education but are unable to attend full-time classes due to other commitments.
