Indian Institutes of Information Technology, Una is one of the 20 new IIITs established by Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India in collaborations with the state governments and industry partners. IIIT Una started operating from 2014. This institute is located in the Una district of Himachal Pradesh which is identified as a main industrial hub in Himachal. IIIT Una started its first batch from 2014. It started functioning from the campus of its mentor, National Institute of Technology (NIT), Hamirpur. This institute is established on PPP basis by Ministry of HRD, Government of India; State government of Himachal and industries partners. H.P Power Corporation and H.P Power Transmission Corporation are the Industry partner of IIIT Una.
IIIT Una is a result of the bill passed by Ministry of HRD in the parliament about establishment of 20 new IIITs in different parts of the country on PPP basis. In the year 2017, IIIT Una along with other IIITs, was given “Institute of National Importance” status. IIIT Una started its first batch for the academic year 2014-15 by offering only one course in two different specializations. It offered B.tech in Computer Science & Engineering and B.tech in Electronics & Communication Engineering. From 2017 onwards, it started offering B.tech in Information Technology. IIIT Una has been functioning from its temporary campus at NIT Hamirpur, but due to inability of the NIT institute in accommodating IIIT Una students, it started its secondary temporary campus in Chandpur, Haroli. IIIT Una’s Permanent campus is under constructions and will soon be ready for the intake of students. Currently IIIT Una is operating from these two temporary campuses. 
Admission to the courses offered by IIIT Una is same as other IIITs. The institute takes students for admission to its engineering courses through Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JOSAA) and Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB). JOSAA allocation is based on the rank of the students in Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Main).
