Indian Institute of Technology Delhi is a public technical university and research institution. It is located in Hauz Khas, New Delhi, India. It is also known as IIT Delhi or IITD. It was established in 1961, it was formally inaugurated in August 1961 by Professor Humayun Kabir, Minister of Scientific Research and Cultural Affairs and the first admissions were made in 1961. The IIT Delhi was affiliated to the University of Delhi. The institute was later converted into Institutions of National Importance under the Institute of Technology Amendment Act, 1963 and a full university status with powers to decide its educational policy, conduct its examinations and award its own degrees. In 2018, it was given the status of Institute of Eminence (IoE). According to a government statement released earlier, IIT Delhi to admit up to 30% of foreign students and recruit foreign research faculty to enhance faculty strength.
The primary campus of IIT Delhi is located in Hauz Khas, South Delhi with Sonipat and Jhajjar being the two satellites campuses. The campus is close to educational institutions such as the Jawaharlal Nehru University, Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, All Institute of Medical Sciences, National Institute of Fashion Technology, National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) and Indian Statistical Institute.
IIT Delhi is offers Bachelor of Technology programs in various fields and specialization as well as dual degree B.Tech-cum-M.Tech programs. Admission to these programs is done through Joint Entrance Examination - Advanced. IIT Delhi also offers a post graduate program that offers M.Tech (by coursework), M.S. (By research), M.Sc., M. Des., and MBA under various departments and centers. Admission to the M.Tech program is mainly based on the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE). M.Des (Master of Design) Admission Design for General Entrance Examination (CEED), M.Sc. Admissions is through the Joint Entrance Examination Masters (JAM) and MBA admissions are through the Common Admission Test (CAT).
