Karunya Institute of Technology and Sciences was founded in 1986 and is recognised by the UGC and AICTE, as well as NAAC and NBA. The institution is the realisation of its founders' goal, Late Dr D. G. S. Dhinakaran and current Chancellor Dr Paul Dhinakaran. It was founded in 1986 as an engineering college and was awarded the autonomous status in 2000 when it was designated as a Deemed-to-be University.

Furthermore, the MBA and BCom programmes are certified by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (UK). It is now ranked 80 for Engineering by NIRF 2020 and provides more than 100 programmes at the undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels in fields such as Engineering, Management, Arts, and Science, to name a few. This Deemed-to-be University's campus is stretched across 700 acres of land and is fully equipped with wi-fi.
