After the journey of SVNIT, NIT decided to explore its own campus in another state through which student can reach easily, get the benefit of NITs in different way. National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli (also known as NIT Trichy or NITT), also called as Regional Engineering College, Tiruchirappalli, is a public engineering and research institute  was settled in 1964. This is the oldest institutions of the NIT system. The biggest think is that this institute was established as a joint and co-operative venture between the Government of India and the Government of Tamil Nadu. It has its own campus with the all facilities, providing the high quality of technical education, greatest level of class room with all facilities on the land of 800 acres. Government of India allowed that National Institute of Technology will be as an Institute of National Importance, under the guidance of National Institute of Technology Act 2007. It was also permitted the Deemed University Status in the year 2003 when it renamed the National Institute of Technology. National Institute of Technology has wide range of talented student which is committed by the faculty and have connectivity to research centre, make the students practically to face the real-world problem, push them potential and providing them right direction to turns out in professional and providing the sprit to make socialistic technical tools. The motive of this Institute to develop the knowledge and explore the talented student. NIT Tiruchirappalli aims to make all possessive result to produce new scientific researchers of tomorrow.

Many courses are offered by the NIT Tiruchirappalli in UG programme, PG programs, and M.Sc. programme, PhD, and offers graduate programmes in 23 disciplines, including 21 programmes in science and engineering, leading to a Master of Science (M.Sc.) or Master of Technology and another respectively. These all courses are conducted by the National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli every year; for taking the admission in NIT Tiruchirappalli applicants have to go through the Entrance Exams of JEE Main and TUET.
