PATTERN

GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) is a computer based Entrance Exam. This exam is conducted to check the understanding and knowledge of candidates about various engineering and science undergraduate subjects. GATE exam is conducted for admission in Post Graduation Courses of IITs and IISc Bangalore.

Multiple choice Questions and Numerical Answer type questions are asked in the examination. A total of 65 questions are asked in the examination. Ten questions are asked from the topics of General Aptitude and rest of the questions are asked from the discipline opted by the candidate. There are a total of 25 Papers. Marking Scheme (for Papers AE, AG, BT, CE, CH, CS, EC, EE, IN, ME, MN, MT, PE, PI, TF, XE and BM)

  • There are a total of 65 questions in each paper. Each paper is of 100 marks and divided into three subsections.

General Aptitude Section

  • A total of 10 questions of 15 marks are asked from this section
  • This section consists of 5 questions of 2 marks and 5 questions of 1 mark.

Engineering Mathematics

  • A total of 10 questions of 15 marks are asked from this section
  • This section consists of 5 questions of 2 marks and 5 questions of 1 mark.

Selected Subject

  • This section contains 70 % weightage of the total marks.
  • This section consists of a total of 25 Questions of 2 marks and 20 Questions of 1 Mark.

Marking Scheme (for Papers AR, CY, EY, GG, MA, PH and XL)

General Aptitude Section

  • A total of 10 questions of 15 marks are asked from this section
  • This section consists of 5 questions of 2 marks and 5 questions of 1 mark.

Selected Subject

  • This section contains 85 % weightage of the total marks.

Negative Marking

  • There is no negative marking in Numerical Answer Type (NAT) Questions.
  • In case of 1 mark questions (MCQs), one-third of the marks will be deducted for incorrect answer
  • In case of 2 marks questions (MCQs), two-third of the marks will be deducted for incorrect answer
