Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur) is a public institution. It established by the Government of India in 1951. It is also known as the IIT-KGP. It is the first institute to establish IITs and is recognized as an institution of National Importance. In 2019, it was given the status of Institute of Eminence.
After India gained independence in 1947, the institute was established to train scientists and engineers. However, over the years, the educational capabilities of the institute have been diversified with offerings in management, law, architecture, humanities, and more. IIT Kharagpur has 8.5 square kilometers (2,100 acres) campus and has about 22,000 inhabitants. The students and alumni of IIT Kharagpur are informally known as KGPians. 
West Bengal had the highest concentration of industries at that time, with West Bengal Chief Minister Bidhan Chandra Roy persuading Jawaharlal Nehru (the first Prime Minister of India) to establish the first institution in West Bengal. The first Indian Institute of Technology was established in May 1950 as the Eastern Higher Technical Institute. It was located in Esplanade East, Calcutta, and in September 1950 moved to its permanent campus in Kharagpur, 120 km southwest of Calcutta. Hijli was used as a detention camp during the British colonial rule in India, to imprison Indian freedom fighters. 
IIT Kharagpur has a many colleges like as:

•    A Law School (Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law)
The Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law college has been opened in collaboration with George Washington University. Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law is the only law school in the IIT system of the country. The School of Medical Science and Technology at IIT Kharagpur is also the first and the only one of its kind in the country where M.B.B.S. graduates are trained in the arts and sciences of medical research with the aim of providing a platform for interdisciplinary teaching and research in the field of medical science and technology.
