After the National Institute of Technology, Delhi, in the same year the National Institute of Technology, Puducherry (NITPY) was established in 2010, is self-governing public engineering Institute located in Union Territory of Puducherry, Karaikal.  NITPY is one of the 31 National Institutes of Technology of India and is announced as an Institute of National Importance by Government of India under NIT Act, 2007.  National Institute of Technology, Puducherry (NITPY) situated in 258 acres near village Poovam in Thiruvettakudy, Karaikal, in 2009, it was permitted by the Government of India, as part of the 11th Five Year Plan (2007-2012). Every year 11,000+ students graduate with flying color since its established year.

National Institute of Technology, Puducherry presenting 5 courses in B.tech these are- Civil Engineering,  Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, 4 courses in M.tech those are- Computer Science & Engineering, Communication Systems,  Power Electronics, Design Engineering and there are nine courses in Ph.D. programme in the following discipline-Chemistry, Civil Engineering,  Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering,  Electronics and Communication Engineering, English, Mathematics,  Mechanical Engineering,  Physics. These all course offered by the university is affiliated by AICTE, providing quality education in the area of technical studies. They give the admission on the basis of merit received in JEE Main examination. The institute also accepts foreign student through the scholarship awarded by the Government of India, and no-resident Indians through the scheme known as Direct Admission for Students Abroad (DASA).
