JEE Main Exam Eligibility 2023

For appearing in JEE Main Examination, the candidates must fulfill the eligibility criteria laid down by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE)/ National Testing Agency. Even though the regulating body has changed but the eligibility remained the same. The basic eligibility requirement for JEE Main is to pass the 10+2 examination. Apart from this, Identity proof is also required. As identity proof Aadhar Card is a mandatory document without which candidates will not be considered eligible for the exam. And for Foreign Applicants valid Passport is mandatory as identity proof. The following are the detailed criteria on which candidates’ eligibility is tested for appearing in JEE Main Exam 2023.

Age Limit Criterion

For being eligible for appearing in JEE Main candidates must fall under the following age criterion:

Categories of Candidates

General Category

No Age Limit

For SC/ST, PWD Category

No Age Limit

Only the 10th Board Certificate will be considered to check the DOB of a candidate. No other document will be used in the matter of Date of Birth for JEE Main.

Year of Passing the Qualifying Examination

  • Those candidates who have completed their intermediate or higher secondary education (12th) or another equivalent qualifying exam in 2021, 2022 and those who will appear in such examination in 2023 or after are not appropriate to appear in JEE Main Exam 2023.
  • Candidates who have passed their class 12th Exam or any equivalent qualifying exam in 2021 or 2022 or those who are appearing in their class 12th Exam or equivalent qualifying exam in 2023 are entitled to appear in JEE (Main) 2023.

Number of Subjects in Qualifying Examination

  • For appearing in JEE Main, it is compulsory to pass the 12th /qualifying examination with at least five subjects.
  • The candidates who have passed the 12th/qualifying examination with four or lesser subjects are not eligible for the JEE Main 2023.

Scores and Subjects Required in Qualifying Examination

Admission to Top Institutions of Engineering like NITs, IIITs, and CFTIs will be based on All India Rank. The candidates are required to score as mentioned below in the 12th/equivalent qualifying examination to be eligible for admission.

For General category candidates

Minimum of 75% marks in aggregate

For SC/ST/PWD candidates

Minimum of 65% marks in aggregate

As regards subjects for B.E/B. Tech, a candidate must have passed the 12th/equivalent qualifying examination with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects and for B.Arch/B. Planning Mathematics is required as a mandatory subject.

Total Number of Attempts

At present, any candidate can appear a maximum of 2 times in the JEE Main Examination. After appearing 2 times in a consecutive year then the candidate is not allowed to give the exam. So candidates who have appeared for the 2021, and 2022 JEE Main examinations are not eligible for giving 2023 exams. There is no relaxation for those candidates who belong to reserved categories. And if someone has registered for JEE Main Exam but has not appeared for the examination.
