The Kurukshetra University was set up in 1956 as a unitary residential university in which the foundation stone was laid by Dr. Rajendra Prasad. The university campus is on the western bank of the sacred Brahma Sarovar and covers a total of 400 acres, located in the holy city of Kurukshetra, the birthplace of the legend Mahabharata and the birthplace of the Bhagavad Gita.
Starting with only the Department of Sanskrit, the university has grown to be a multi-faculty institution. It is among the most prominent centres of higher education, advanced study and research in the region today.
